Be creative!

What a wonderful medium! Through writing we can express ideas coupled with our emotion and thought. It is like other artistic mediums, (art, music, architecture et cetera) and can be used to inform, inspire and provoke.

Many people write, some with great thought and others with little. The gift should not be taken for granted and we should use it to the betterment of our own personal life as well as to influence the lives of others.

The key aims a piece of writing should seek are:

• to engage with the audience (i.e. those who read what is written).
• to be clear and understandable.
• to be educating (the content need not be academic or factual to do this), and inspire discussion.
• to portray justly the author’s vision and understanding of the subject, hopefully touching the audience.
• to provide the audience with a sense of benefit from reading it.

With these aims in mind, we should seek to take care with our writing to make it interesting, and hopefully compelling. With this in mind, the next stage is to start writing…

These days writing need not be hindered by spelling like mine or grammatic instability. Spelling and grammar checking tools are widely available in modern word processing programs (although they are not always correct). With e-mail, sending writing to trusted friends and family for editing is easier. On the whole, new doors to writing have been opened by technology.
