On Writing Poetry

Poetry should be enjoyed. It is an expressive medium that lets us communicate an idea or ideas to the reader though imagery. It is brief (compared to novels) and allows the poet to get his or her idea across without the technicalities of a novel or short story and without the need for other apparatus. (Many musicians need an instrument (if they are not singing) and artists often require suitable ways to convey their media onto a suitable surface.)

With that verbal diarrhea complete (and I hope you understand what I am getting at) I will talk about writing poetry.

Poetry, as I have said earlier on the ‘about’ page, should not be regimental (allowing for specific styles). Indeed one should explore different ways of writing. I find that certain stimuli will lead to a different approach than others. This variance can make your poetry interesting and refreshing. Hopefully you will also be intrigued by your findings.

With poetry grammar can be toyed with – where deemed appropriate. It seems that sometimes the grammatically unthinkable can be what gives a poem its twist. Be adventurous. Also remember that if appurtenant to the theme of the poem, grammatic transgressions such as “text speak” (i.e. txt spk) may be used.

Remember also that conciseness might also help the poem. Choose you words wisely, a poem can be thought of as a puzzle. Think of what you wish to communicate and in what way. Putting the pieces together with thought can lead to an enjoying read.
